Latched Support serve mothers, children, families, and communities in Bexar County with the mission to break through cultural barriers, bring education, and support for breastfeeding during prenatal and postpartum periods. Their goal is to raise awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding within communities which currently reflect a low percentage of breastfeeding mothers, specifically, African-American and Hispanic communities.
Latched Support helps families offer their babies the healthiest start in life through breastfeeding. Latched Support offers free breastfeeding support from pregnancy and beyond by International Board-Certified Lactation Consultants and registered nurses, in addition to parenting classes and diaper supplies for parents. Latched Support works most closely with African American and Latino communities, which reflect a low percentage of breastfeeding mothers. With an understanding of cultural competency, the organization specifically pairs consultants and nurses of color with mothers of color, which has illustrated a higher rate of success in breastfeeding. Breastfeeding leads to better health outcomes for both babies and mothers, with the potential to reduce systemic health disparities in communities of color.
